Carry-Over Results

Last updated: September 23, 2026

When a group stage follows another group stage, the second one doesn't have to start from zero. MyCup can carry results from the earlier stage into the new tables, in one of two ways:

Option What counts in the new table Are pairings played again? Typical format
Start from zero Nothing from the earlier stage Yes The default
Results between teams from the same group Only the game(s) two teams already played against each other in the same earlier group No — that pairing is not scheduled again An intermediate round (e.g. youth festivals): 1st and 2nd of Group A and Group B meet in a new group
Full record from the previous stage Every game each team played in the earlier stage — points, goals and head-to-head all continue Yes — every pairing is played A league split into a championship and a relegation round (e.g. the Cypriot First Division)

Before you start#

Carry-over works through automatic team progression: the new stage's slots must be filled with Auto-advance → Group position (for example "1st from Group A"). That's how MyCup knows which earlier group each team came from.

  • A team placed into the new stage by hand carries nothing — it has no earlier group to carry from.
  • The option only appears on a group stage that comes after another group stage (or whose slots are already wired to earlier groups). The first stage never shows it.

Turning it on#

  1. Open the Structure page and switch to the Advanced view.
  2. Click the settings (gear) icon on the header of the later group stage — for example "Intermediate round" or "Second round".
  3. Under Carry over results, pick one of the three options and click Save.
  4. If you picked or left Results between teams from the same group, click Regenerate — it shows a gold Outdated badge, because the repeat pairings have to be taken out of the fixture list. The other two options don't change which matches exist, so there's nothing to rebuild.

You can change the option at any time; standings recalculate straight away.

Example 1 — an intermediate round (results between teams from the same group)#

A one-day youth tournament with 32 teams:

  • Round 1: 8 groups of 4, everyone plays everyone once.
  • Intermediate round: 4 groups of 4. Each takes the 1st and 2nd place teams from two round-1 groups — A1, A2, B1, B2 in one group; C1, C2, D1, D2 in the next, and so on.
  • Rule: teams only play the opponents they haven't met yet. The result of the game already played in round 1 counts again.

Set it up:

  1. Build round 1 as a group stage with 8 groups of 4.
  2. Add a second group stage with 4 groups of 4.
  3. Wire each intermediate slot with Auto-advance → Group position: 1st from Group A, 2nd from Group A, 1st from Group B, 2nd from Group B — and the same pattern for the other groups.
  4. In the intermediate stage's settings, choose Results between teams from the same group, save, and click Regenerate.

What you get:

  • Each intermediate group gets 4 matches instead of 6. A1–A2 and B1–B2 already met in round 1, so those pairings are left out.
  • Before a ball is kicked in the intermediate round, each team already shows 1 game played in the new table — the carried result.
  • Matchdays stay packed. If leaving out the repeat pairings empties a whole matchday, it's removed rather than shown empty on your website.

Example 2 — a league split (full record from the previous stage)#

A 12-team league in the style of the Cypriot First Division:

  • Regular season: one league, everyone plays everyone twice (22 games).
  • Second round: the top 6 play for the title and the bottom 6 play to avoid relegation. Points, goal difference and head-to-head are all kept from the regular season.

Set it up:

  1. Build the regular season as a group stage with one group of 12.
  2. Add a second group stage with two groups — e.g. Championship (6 slots) and Relegation (6 slots).
  3. Wire the Championship slots to 1st6th from the regular-season group, and the Relegation slots to 7th12th.
  4. In the second stage's settings, choose Full record from the previous stage and save.

What you get:

  • The second-round tables continue from the regular season: a team that finished on 45 points starts the championship round on 45 points, with its goals and games played carried too.
  • Every game counts — including games against teams that went to the other group. Those opponents simply don't get a row in this table.
  • Head-to-head tiebreakers use regular-season games as well.
  • Every pairing is played again, so the Championship and Relegation groups get their full fixture lists.

On your public website#

The standings page says what was carried so visitors aren't confused by a team showing more games played than it has fixtures:

  • Results between teams from the same group — a Carried over list appears under the group's table, naming each game, for example "Round 1 · Group A: Leverkusen 2–1 Frankfurt".
  • Full record from the previous stage — one line under the table: "Includes the full record from Regular season".

Carried games are read from the earlier stage, not copied. They aren't shown twice in match lists, and top scorers count each goal only once.

Correcting an earlier score#

Fix a score in the earlier stage and everything downstream follows:

  • The earlier table and the later table both update.
  • Teams that already advanced from the later stage — for example the winner of an intermediate group feeding a final — are re-promoted if the corrected result changes who finished where.

You don't need to regenerate or reassign anything by hand.

Troubleshooting#

I don't see the "Carry over results" option#

  • The option is only on a group stage that comes after another group stage. Knockout rounds don't have it.
  • Make sure you're opening the stage settings (gear on the stage header), not a group's or a round's settings.

The earlier result isn't counted#

  • Check the slots use Auto-advance → Group position. Teams placed with Pick a team don't carry anything.
  • For Results between teams from the same group, both teams must come from the same earlier group. A1 and B1 have never met, so there's nothing to carry.
  • Only Finished matches count (and in-progress ones, if your website is set to include ongoing matches in standings).

The repeat pairing is still in the fixture list#

After switching to Results between teams from the same group, click Regenerate on the Structure page. Until then the old fixture list — with the repeat pairings — stays in place.
